Giclee printing is the high quality reproduction of art work using ink jet printers. Originally the printer of choice was the Iris, however in the past few years pigmented ink printers have replaced the Iris. These advances in ink jet printing technology have allowed for major advantages in this method of art reproduction compared to more traditional printing presses. These advantages include higher quality because these printers use more ink colors, print at higher resolution and use some form of stochastic screening which allows better reproduction of photographic like images. In addition the prints are made directly from computer files so the initial set up costs are lower and the printers are much less costly then presses so short runs are economically feasible. But the Giclee process is more than just making the print on art paper or canvas. The Giclee setup and proofing procedure allows you, the artist, to have the opportunity to view a proof that is printed on the same printer with the same paper as the final print. You can then have input into the corrections that will make the reproduction as close to the original as possible. Or you can choose to go in the direction of creating new art right there in the computer. |
