Giclee printing is the high quality reproduction of art work using ink jet printers. Originally the printer of choice was the Iris, however in the past few years other printers have replaced the Iris, most notably Epson's pigmented ink printers. These advances in ink jet printing technology have allowed for major advantages in this method of art reproduction compared to more traditional printing presses. These advantages include higher quality because these printers use more ink colors, print at higher resolution and use some form of stochastic screening which allows better reproduction of photographic like images. Proofs are much more exact since the proof is printed on the same printer and with the same paper as the final print. In addition the prints are made directly from computer files so the initial set up costs are lower and the printers are much less costly then presses so short runs are economically feasible. With the Giclee setup and proofing procedure you, the artist, has the opportunity to have input into the reproduction process that in the past was available only at the most expensive levels of offset printing. With Giclee you can make reproductions that are very close to the original or you can choose to go in the direction of new art. |
